Discord began automatically classifying users as adults or teenagers, based on signals such as how long the account has existed, servers frequented, and level of activity. The platform states that it does not access messages or calls to estimate age.
Users with an unconfirmed age will be able to prove their age of majority using a credit card, application stores, digital wallet or age credential services, in addition to sending a document or video selfie.
The company says that third-party providers must permanently delete data after verification and that facial age estimation systems will only work on the user's device. Around 90% of the public will not need to do anything, according to Discord.
