The expansion of data center infrastructure in Brazil appears in the government plans of the main candidates for President, according to a survey by BBC News Brasil. The proposals involve tax incentives and support for the installation of new structures.
Data centers are large facilities that bring together servers to store and process data, including artificial intelligence systems. In August, the government announced a supercomputer worth around R$1 billion in Macaíba (RN) and another advanced computing structure in Rio de Janeiro, with Chinese companies.
The proposals differ regarding the role of the State, the attraction of foreign capital, the transfer of technology and environmental requirements. Experts consulted by the report assess that the expansion increases the country's technological capacity, but does not alone guarantee the so-called digital sovereignty.
