After 67 workers were rescued from a situation considered analogous to slavery in a sugarcane mill in Cabo Frio, the responsible company signed a Conduct Adjustment Agreement with the Public Ministry of Labor of Rio de Janeiro.
The rescue took place on September 21, in a joint action by the MPT-RJ, the Regional Superintendence of Labor and Employment and the Federal Police. According to the inspection, the working hours reached 15 hours a day, with delays in payments and accommodation with insects, lack of cabinets and hot water.
After the redemption, the contracts were terminated and the amounts due totaled about $335,000. Under the agreement, the company undertakes to follow the legal rules of hiring and outsourcing, with semi-annual inspection of accommodation and a fine of $30,000 for unfulfilled obligations.
