A subantarctic fur seal was spotted on Monday morning (21) on Monte Alto beach, in Arraial do Cabo. The animal was identified by the Lagos Region Marine Mammal Study Group, GEMM-Lagos.
According to veterinarian Gabriela Siqueira, it is a young and healthy male, who stopped in that area of the coast to rest during the migratory route. The species lives on subantarctic islands and occasionally appears on the coast of Rio de Janeiro in winter.
The advice is not to approach, touch or feed the animal, nor try to return it to the sea. Marine mammals found in the region must be reported to GEMM-Lagos by calling 0800 991 4800. The information is from g1.
